I have a (potential) free m.2 port on the motherboard of my acer swift, it’s a nvme gen 3 port i guess. Will the hailo-8 or 8L work if I just plug it in and manage to chill it?

If the M.2 port supports PCIe this should work. However we cannot say for certain until it is tested.
That is a good point. Make sure there is some possibility to connect the top of the Hailo-8/8L with some metal to dissipate heat. The Hailo-8 can get hot when running heavy workloads.
