Hailo 8L is hot even when not in use

I recently received my Hailo 8L AI Kit and installed it on my Raspberry Pi 5. The Hailo accelerator works incredibly well but I notice that it is always fairly warm, even when I am not using it. My Pi is turned on but there are no neural tasks running, yet the Hailo is pretty hot. Is this normal?

I think so. Don’t worry about it. The transistors inside the chip always work. In AI, the principle of operation is not the same as in a microprocessor, where transistors switch faster during operation and consume more current.

yes, basically all NPU are hot if no heatsink. but you can use hailo without heatsink. you also check the thermal status thru hailo tool. However the performance could become lower if the temperature goes on highly.
it depends on your hardware and testing room condition.
To avoid thermal concern, use heatsink or other fan besides on ai chip, just for test.
