Hailo-8 HM218B1C2HAE on Raspberry Pi CM5 via PCIe Gen2 x1

Hi Hailo team and community,

I plan to use the Hailo-8 M.2 module HM218B1C2HAE with a Raspberry Pi CM5 (CM5108032) on a Waveshare CM5-IO-BASE-B. The module is PCIe Gen3 x4, while the board provides a PCIe Gen2 x1 connection.

  1. Does the Hailo PCIe driver and HailoRT support this module on a CM5 ARM64 system?
  2. Which operating system, kernel, PCIe driver, and HailoRT versions do you recommend?
  3. Can the module operate over a PCIe Gen2 x1 connection? Are there any known limitations or required settings?

Have you tested this module on a CM5 or a similar ARM64 system? If this question belongs in another support channel, please let me know.

Thank you.

Welcome to the Hailo Community!

This should work just like the Raspberry Pi 5 with a the Raspberry AI HAT+.

When you use the Raspberry Pi OS you can use the official installation procedure from Raspberry.
You can also use other OS and compile the HailoRT driver from source.

Yes, the Hailo-8 M.2 modules are compliant with the PCIe specification which supports backwards compatibility. Also the number of lanes are automatically negotiated at boot.
You may be able to use PCIe gen 3. See Raspberry Pi AI documentation on how to enable that.

We validate our software on multiple ARM64 based systems.
